Simple Grilled Cheese Sandwich

For most people, a classic grilled cheese sandwich is one of the top comfort food choices. Achieving the perfect grilled cheese sandwich, however, can be a struggle. Getting all the elements of a perfect grilled cheese sandwich is actually very easy using my tried and true method. Not only does a grilled cheese sandwich stir up nostalgic memories of childhood, it also reminds me of the days when our favorite bands were touring and you could grab a grilled cheese in the lot, or from the Solar Café pop up at Wanee (I might be a little off on the name). When I asked my girls what kind of grilled cheese they wanted me to make, they looked at me like I was crazy, so today, we’re keeping things simple and going with a classic grilled cheese sandwich.

I prefer to use grated cheese because it melts more consistently and within the time frame of the butter and bread cooking. Take everything one step at a time and don’t rush the process.

First, gather your supplies and ingredients.

Supplies:

Skillet

Spatula or preferred turner

Plate

Knife

Pizza wheel (optional)

Cheese grater (if using block cheese)

Ingredients:

Bread

Shredded cheese

Butter

Next, grate your cheese if you are using block cheese. Set aside.

Place your bread on the plate and have your butter open and ready.

Warm up your skillet on medium (or just below) heat.

You can go ahead and place about ½-1 tablespoon butter in the skillet. When it melts down, tilt the skillet in various directions to spread the butter over the surface.

Place a piece of bread on top of the butter.

Sprinkle your desired amount of cheese on the bread.

Let everything sit for a quick moment.

Using your spatula or turner, slide it under the piece of bread with cheese and transfer to your plate.

Melt another pat of butter and let it spread over the skillet as before.

Place a new piece of bread on top of what you have already begun cooking.

Flip the sandwich over so the new piece of bread is on the bottom.

Place the sandwich on top of the melted butter as you did before.

Flip the sandwich until you have reached desired crispiness.

I use a pizza wheel to cut my grilled cheese sandwiches into the desired size. It’s a parenting hack I developed in the past year and a total game changer.

There are so many variations of grilled cheese sandwiches, the possibilities are virtually limitless. Bread, cheeses, additional meats, veggies, and fruits, condiments, seasonings … Oh, my.
